Walshy Fire, Grammy-nominated DJ, MC, and producer of Major Lazer, is set to release Art of Dancehall: Flyer and Poster Designs of Jamaican Dancehall Culture on April 1st via Rizzoli Universe. The book showcases rare and historic dancehall flyer and poster art from Jamaica, New York, London, Canada, and Japan, offering a visual journey through the evolution of sound system culture.
Featuring artwork from legendary designers like the late Denzil "Sassafrass" Naar and insights from collectors and sound system figures worldwide, Art of Dancehall captures the raw creativity that helped shape the genre. Designed by renowned Jamaican artist Nurse Signs, the book highlights the influence of dancehall on global music and visual culture.
Originating in Jamaica in the late 1970s, dancehall evolved from reggae into a high-energy, club-driven sound that resonated with the Jamaican diaspora, fueling the rise of sound system culture in New York and London. Its influence extended into hip hop, electronic music, and global pop culture, making its visual identity just as significant as its sound.
The release also coincides with Walshy Fire’s upcoming album of the same name, a strictly dancehall-focused follow-up to his 2019 debut Abeng. Art of Dancehall is available for pre-order now.
